API 5L Line Pipes — ERW & LSAW
JCO Gas Pipe Ltd. manufactures line pipes by two complementary processes. ERW (Electric Resistance Welding)is used for smaller diameters (½" to 24" NB), where a coiled steel strip is cold-formed into a cylinder and the longitudinal seam is welded using high-frequency electric current — fast, economical, and ideal for City Gas Distribution networks.
LSAW pipes are produced through the JCO process: a heavy steel plate is bent successively into J, C, and O shapes, then closed and seam-welded using submerged arc welding from inside and outside. The result is a heavy-duty, large-diameter line pipe (16" to 56" OD) suitable for high-pressure cross-country gas and oil transmission.
Both ERW and LSAW pipes conform to API 5L in PSL 1 and PSL 2 specification levels — covering Gr.B and high-strength grades X42, X52, X60, X65, X70 — and are 100% hydro-tested with full NDT including ultrasonic, radiographic, and electromagnetic inspection.
PSL 1 vs. PSL 2
PSL 1 is the basic specification level. PSL 2 adds mandatory additional requirements — chemical composition limits, notch toughness (Charpy), non-destructive testing, and hydrostatic test pressures — required for critical gas and oil pipelines.
